So, I was in Starbucks yesterday and noticed that at two different tables, there was a "manager" type of person with paper in front of him reviewing another person who was probably an employee. And, the manager type of person was alot younger than the employee. I've actually noticed this a couple of times in this particular Starbucks.

I said a silent prayer of thanks that I did not have to work for lawyers anymore and be "reviewed". I'm thankful that I can stay home with Kristie while setting my own work schedule with Park Lane.

Thank goodness.

Who do you know that needs a break from the employee race? Send the Business brochure vial email and give them a call. You never know who's looking.

P.S. Happy anniversary to Kristie! Its been exactly one year since her kidney transplant and she's doing great!

CONVENTION IN LAS VEGAS

Convention is coming up quick! We leave on Thursday and return home on the following Tuesday.

We have nonstop meetings on Friday and Saturday and then of course the Awards Banquet on Saturday (which includes a sit down dinner) is always so much fun.

I can't wait for them to unveil the NEW catalog and NEW jewelry on Saturday morning...they always do such a GRAND job of showcasing the jewelry...very professionally done which I so appreciate!

Lots of people from our Group are receiving awards and it'll be fun to see everyone on stage!

If you are not able to attend convention this time, make sure you plan on attending the next one in August in Chicago!

Darn that Miss Indiana! Oops, I meant to say Congratulations Miss Indiana! Okay, so our be-jeweled Miss Illinois didn't win Miss America; darn it. But, that just gives us something to look forward to for next year!

I'm reading a book by Jack Canfield titled "The Success Principles...How to get where you are to where you want to be." A fantastic book, full of 450 pages of useful, practical information on anyone wanting more out of life. I recommend it highly.

I've been reading this book on and off for about a year now. Its not a book (in my opinion) that you can just read straight thru at one shot. It takes some thinking. Here's a small excerpt:

Reward your inner child. ...A big part of creating more success in your life is rewarding yourself when you succeed In reality, rewarding yourself for your successes keeps your inner child happy and compliant the next time it must behave. It knows it can trust you to eventually deliver on your promises. If you don't just like a real child, it will start to sabotage your efforts by doing things like getting sick, having accidents, or making mistakes that cost you a promotion or even your job, so that you are forced to take some time off. And that will only take you further away from the success you really want.

Good advice.

I like to reward myself with a facial. I find that if I get a facial every six weeks or so, my skin feels and looks fabulous. And its relaxing!

Inventory A No Win Situation

I named this blog smart women and jewelry because I truly believe that direct sales women are among the smartest in the world. They know how to make their businesses fit their family's lives and that's smart!

I believe that working with a direct sales company that does not require you to carry inventory is the best way to go because you personally do not go into debt while running your business. And you don't help the owners get rich off of your inventory purchases. And those in your upline do not get paid simply because you purchased inventory. They should get paid if you sell the product, but they should not get paid if you're simply buying inventory and then putting that inventory somewhere in your house unsold. That's unfair.

Ask yourself this question. Who is getting paid in an inventory system? First, its the company. They want you to buy inventory because that is the only way they make money. Frankly, they don't really care if you sell the inventory; that's not their concern. What they want to do is make the product so appealing to you that you have to buy it! Their whole sales & marketing campaign is build around YOU, the representative, buying their product. YOU are their customer. If you don't buy it from them, who will?

Who else gets paid if you buy inventory? Your upline team. Hmmm, could it be that's why they encourage your purchasing each month, perhaps saying to you "just book some parties and you'll sell it." The only way they get paid is if you buy inventory, not if you sell it! And they encourage that company compensation plan which promotes quotas because they get paid more. Quotas make you buy more.

Having to buy inventory is a no win situation. Its not good for your business. I hate to see women go into debt when they simply don't have to.

Try Park Lane. We don't do the inventory thing!

Wow. I'm excited to live in 2009! Many of you know that my daughter, Kristie, had her kidney transplant last July. The six month mark is coming up on January 17th and we're looking forward to her getting off some of the heavy medication she has been taking.

We're looking forward to good health in 2009!

Thank you to all my team members who kept us in their prayers and sent good thoughts our way.

Thank you also to the LeVin family who told me to just do what I could with my business, knowing that Kristie comes first.

ARE ALL INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS GOOD FOR DISTRIBUTORS?

You would think they should be. After all, isn’t the direct sales and network marketing industry built on the backs of distributors? If you continue to read this “Publisher’s Perspective” you may have a rude awakening. Why? All industry associations are not built the same. They were created by different segments of the industry with different interests.
There are four main associations that serve the direct sales and network marketing industry. They are: Distributor Rights Association (DRA); Direct Selling Association (DSA); Direct Selling Women’s Alliance (DSWA); and the Multi-Level Marketing International Association (MLMIA). I will discuss them in the order that they’re listed in above – alphabetical.
DSA is oldest but is it best?
The DSA is the oldest and best-financed association. Although with less than 10 percent of the industry companies as the only voting members, it has the fewest voting members. It was founded in 1910. About 15 years ago, it almost went bankrupt. Amway, and a few other large companies, helped save the DSA. Dues Start at $1,500 for new companies and quickly rise based on net sales for the previous year to as much as $250,000. Supplier companies pay a rate of $2,500. By the time the large companies pay fees for various committees, the DSEF, sponsorships and donations, they can easily spend more than a million dollars a year with the DSA.
The DSA is a private, non-profit corporation. What does that mean? When I asked Joe Mariano, the DSA’s executive vice president, who owns the DSA, he said, “Member companies own the DSA.” I asked, “Do all member companies own the DSA equally or are they prorated in amount of dues? He replied, as you can expect a lawyer would, “All the companies that own the DSA are member companies.” So who own the DSA? Do your own research. Don’t be surprised to find the same large companies heading the important committees year after year are the same ones that contribute the majority of the total funds and receive most of the awards.
Only direct sales companies can be voting members of the DSA. Its members include about a dozen large direct sales and network marketing companies that virtually control it and a couple of dozen mid-sized companies. The balance of the DSA voting membership consists of mainly small party plan companies. The DSA also accepts dues from vendors, who have no votes or virtually no say, but distributors cannot be members at all. Who’s interest do you think the DSA has in mind? Vendors? Distributors? Anyone but the few large controlling companies? Do you think the DSA even represents the interest of the small corporate members or are these small corporate members just being used to give the DSA and large corporate members the appearance of legitimately representing the industry?
Do you think the DSA cares at all about distributors other than as assets of companies? Consider the following. I have never heard the DSA consider one distributor issue out of concern for distributors. Any policy that seems to protect the distributors has been a result of trying to protect the companies, usually from over regulation. When the NSA company came under fire for “front-end loading,” the DSA implemented a 90-day buy-back rule. It may help protect distributors now, but if it was not for the threat of corporate regulation, do you think that the DSA would have implemented the 90-day buy-back rule?
Consider what the DSA has done over the years. It has held training sessions teaching companies how to write policies so that distributors do not have any rights. These include clauses that give companies the right to terminate distributors without cause and to define the distributor’s entire business to be the sole property of the company. It has advised companies to control the ability of distributors to sell their businesses or forbid passing their businesses to their heirs. At an annual conference, in a speech by Neil Offen, the DSA’s president, he talked of the need to stop distributor associations. He said it may become necessary for the DSA to start its own distributor association so that it can continue to control the distributors. NMBJ and MMM have reported on these events in past issues.
Recently a top DSA executive was named as an expert witness to defend a company who, without a written policy on the issue, had taken a distributor’s business away. This distributor had been numerously recognized for her high performance and support of her downline. The company also allowed cross-sponsoring and downline raids of cross downlines. Is the DSA defending these actions because, under the DSA’s apparent policies, a company can do whatever it wants with a distributor’s business, since the DSA believes the company owns it?
Why would any distributor want to be a member of a company that belongs to the DSA? If your company does, what should you do? I cannot tell you to ask your company to resign or petition them to resign. I cannot suggest that if the company remains a member, that you should move your business to a non-member company. But ask yourself, why would your company belong to an association that does not represent or seems to not even respect distributors’ rights and not be members of the other three associations that protect distributor rights? Why would you want to join a company that does not support distributor rights?

Changing the Words in Your Head

I kept an article titled Throw Yourself from Oprah magazine July 2004. I like the article because its all about reminding yourself to change the words in your head.

I don't know about you, but I need help in this area. I tend to replay conversations or think about things that are long gone but were negative situations. I tend to think about the past but not the future. So, I decided to do something about it. When I catch myself with negative thoughts - and it can be about anything - I consciously decide to change my thoughts to something more positive.

I will even talk to myself and say something like: You know you shouldn't be thinking about that, what else can we think about? What can we think about that will make us happy right now?

The article states: "If you don't consciously prepare yourself each day to practice wonder and joy, you get really good at practicing stress and pain and anger and fear."

We went to see a movie last Saturday that we've been waiting and waiting to come out...Kung Fu Panda...and it was worth the wait! WE LOVED IT! Anyway, afterwards, we went and had dinner and while waiting for our table, I watched this little girl sitting by her Dad waiting for their table. It was a joy watching her watch other people. She smiled constantly and you could tell she was just happy to be there with her Dad. I thought to myself, if only adults could go back and relive the wonder of every day life. That's what children teach us - the wonder of every day life.

Another trick is to start counting your blessings...that works well because it gets your mind off your problems and on your blessings.

If you find yourself thinking thoughts in a self-defeating loop, try replacing the negative loop with what the article calls a mind tool. So, here's some suggestions from the article:

I'm doing the right thing.
Don't quit before the miracle.
When you come to the edge of all you've known and are about to step into darkness, one of two things will happen. Either there will be something solid for you to stand on or you will be taught to fly.
Life is a mystery to be lived, not a puzzle to be solved.
This too shall pass
It's always darkest before the dawn
When God shuts a door, he opens a window
There is a Plan (with a capital P) and I'm being led
God give me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I use this one a lot: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, acknowledge him in all your ways, and he shall direct your path." I'll say this a couple of times to myself because it always reminds me of who is in charge of my life.

And its always best to try and remember that everyone is probably doing their best. Let's give each other a break and give yourself a break. Sometimes I'm too hard on myself. I've had a lot to deal with these past few months and I've been really hard on myself about certain things...I finally had a talk with myself and decided to give ME a break. I don't have to the superstar all the time and I don't have to work all the time and I don't have to fix the perfect meal all the time and I don't have to be doing something all the time...give yourself a break and treat yourself with kindness. Talk to yourself with kindness.

What does this have to do with our jewelry businesses? When we feel joy, just joy in living, life and work become easier. When we give ourselves permission to slow down and not be in perfect mode, we can enjoy those commission checks we get each week.

Maybe your self talk needs some revamping. Do you find yourself dreading trying to book shows? Do you say to yourself "I never get any bookings." Try saying instead, "I always get bookings, they come easily to me." Try saying this for a week and then tell me what happens!

You can use this technique on recruiting and selling as well. Try saying: "I always find the people who are looking for a way to earn extra money." "Women love our jewelry and they always ask if they can buy it from me."

Or, come up with your own! I challenge you to try it for a week and then email me with your results.

Let's start with a personal note, my daughter's kidney transplant is scheduled for July 17th. I will be donating my left kidney. THIS IS GREAT NEWS! Please continue to pray for us as we move forward with this monumental event. Since recovery time for me is 3 to 4 weeks and recovery time for Kristie is 4 to 6 weeks (could even be as long as 6 months) I won't be attending convention in Chicago in August. We are having SUCH A GOOD TIME! Don't you just love getting those checks every week??!! And putting that money in your pocket is the best feeling.

I've been in the direct sales industry for about 6 years now and with Park Lane for a little over 4 months. I have to say I am awestruck by how easy working with Park Lane has been and how easy this business is. I used to say direct sales is not easy, it may be simple but not easy. NOW, I say its simple AND easy! Its easy because of a few reasons.

The biggest reason is that we don't carry inventory. This has changed my life and the life of my team members dramatically. We used to think, with regard to inventory, that "the more products you have, the more you will sell." Our team has proven that theory to be incorrect.

Here's the truth. I can walk out the door with my little Park Lane bag that holds about 50 pieces of jewelry samples and unveil them at my show where all the guests ooh and aah over each piece; hand everyone a catalog and order form and they order!!! Women are used to ordering. I go home, enter the orders on-line, click submit, and my work is done. The orders are shipped directly to the hostess and she distributes it. Every Monday I get a check for the previous week's sales.

It's that easy and it can change your life.

Here are some success stories.

One team member reports that last week she had her highest show so far - hold onto your hats now - $2,300!!!! She will get a profit check of $1, 150!

The Success Principles

My new computer is awesome! I'm slowly getting all the settings up and running. Thank you for your patience!

I'm reading a new book called The Success Principles by Jack Canfield. In it, he challenges us to make a list of 101 things you want to do before you die. My list is up to about 52 now. I thought it would be easy to make a list like that but discovered not so! Its a liberating experience though. Liberating because it makes you think outside the box. "The box" is your little world. Sometimes we get so caught up in our little world that we forget we can expand our thoughts and think bigger!

This is part of what we talked about at the training I lead for our Tri-Cities team last Sunday. I had them start on their list too! When you start your list, make sure that you don't limit yourself with time or money. If time were no problem and money was no problem, what would you put on your list?

Here's part of my list:

1. See Oprah live and in person more than once
2. Take Kristie to see American Idol live
3. Practice Yoga every day
4. Only wear what makes me feel good about myself
5. Live near Katie, Calla, and Nicholas

We also worked on our personal statements. Here's mine: To use practical creativity to help women realize they can use their special gifts to create the life they wish to live.

To create your personal statement, choose two words that describe your unique personal qualities (such as enthusiasm and creativity). Then list one or two ways you enjoy expressing those qualities when interacting with others, such as to support and to inspire. Then create a statement from those thoughts.

Let me warn you, it's a hard task. We had to help each other at the training. But when you do define your personal statement, life becomes easier because you'll only do what falls in line with your personal statement (when scheduling your life outside your family activities).

At our training we also talked about booking and recruiting. I'll post those tips in the next day or so.

Founder's Week is underway! Schedule those individual appointments with those people who don't want to book a show - show them our awesome jewelry and gather orders to be your own hostess!

How should you use the Hostess Reward Certificates

These are commonly called the HRCs (or sometimes I refer to them as the coupons) and they are given to hostesses as a reward for doing certain things. So here's a couple of suggestions on how to use them.

Tell the hostess that she'll get an extra $50 shopping spree that will only cost her $5 if she has 5 outside orders waiting for you when you get to her show.

AND

Tell her she'll get another $50 shopping spree for $5 when she has 1 booking waiting for you at your show.

This strategy will give you more business and make the hostess happy too because she'll get another $100 in jewelry!!!

Also, remember you can offer these extra coupons to ANYONE gathering orders that total $175 (net). So even if you have a couple of girlfriends ordering jewelry that totals that amount, they can take advantage of these coupons!

Business Plan

I was talking with a really SMART representative today and she said that she wanted to put together a business plan for working her business so she could reach her goals. She wants to sell $2500 a month, which is about 5 shows a month (on average). Since she works a full-time job, she knows that she needs to be smart about working her business because she only has a few hours a day to spend with her family and be productive.

She is working on a business and marketing plan where she calls so many people a day and then uses email to promote specials, etc. She also wants to possibly host a show at her home once a month to help generate sales and bookings.

This is a great example of working your business smart! Setting aside some time each day to make your phone calls or send emails or plan out your business strategy is an excellent way to make progress towards your goals each day.

This same plan works for those of us who do not have full-time jobs, but perhaps are full-time Moms. We have limited time as well. Managing our time is an ongoing challenge - sometimes I'm good at it and sometimes I'm not! But I do work on my business every day!

Today I went to pick up my new progressive lenses from my vision office and my vision specialist asked me for more information about Park Lane jewelry. I had showed her my box of rings (that I carry in my purse at all times) the last time I was there and also gave her the mini catalog/invite and she had, obviously, been thinking about it! So I showed her the 2008 collection catalog and explained to her the Customer bonus program and the hostess program. I also got her business card and personal email address so I can do the follow-up.

Make sure you have the necessary items in your purse or in your car so you can be ready to answer questions about the jewelry or the business.

Are you all ready for the Calling Contest? Its the East v. the West or is it the West v. the East? Anyway, you know who you are! You have until the end of the month to make your phone calls! Which team will prevail??!!

Types of Shows

Bookings are the life of our business. So how do you make getting bookings fun? One way is to suggest the different types of shows a hostess can hold - have her choose one that is easiest for her and her lifestyle.

At convention, we received training on different types of shows. Here is a short list of my favorites:

Wine and Cheese Show - have everyone bring a sample of their favorite cheese or wine and you provide the crackers and everyone enjoys the jewelry.

Aunt Matilda Show - You know that gift you received from Aunt Matilda this year and you are not quite sure what you are going to do with it? Well, bring it on over to the jewelry show. We will exchange it for someone else's "Aunt Matilda gift." After all, someone's dust-collector is another's treasure.

Restaurant or Happy Hour show - When you don't want to vacuum, cook or clean choose your favorite restaurant to hold your show. Let them do the work for you. Simply bring six rolls of jewelry and unveil it at the booth/table! Simple and easy.

Mexican Fiesta. Treat your guests to the favorites of Mexico with chips, salsa, and nachos, then top it off with your favorite Mexican inspired beverage.

Holiday Ornament Exchange.; Guests bring an ornament to exchange or donate to an organization in need while feasting their eyes on our beautiful jewelry!

Morning Coffee show - Everyone brings their favorite coffee mug and you fill it with your favorite coffee and flavored accompaniments.

Strawberries and Champagne show - I like this one!

Here's a fabulous story to share from one of our team members:

I went to the doctors Tuesday morning and the receptionist commented on my NEW jewelry. I left a catalog with her during my appt and when I came out she showed me what she wanted to order. I didn't have a customer form so I asked her if I could come back the next day to fill out her order and get her check. She said sure. I noticed later that she ordered an item that was $39, so when she called later to say she couldn't see me Wednesday but to come Thursday morning, I told her about the $12 ITEM! She was excited.

So when I went in this morning to get her order, she found and item for $12 also and wrote her check asking if I could hold it til her next payday. Then I said, what if I leave the catalog here, you can show it around, put it in the waiting area, whatever you'd like. The other receptionist said she'd look through cause she loves jewelry and she'd probably buy something! So, then I said, if you get four other people to order, I can tear up that check of yours and you can get those two sets of earrings for free! She asked how, and I told her briefly about the hostess plan and told her I'd call her this weekend to go over it more!

She just called and asked for more explanation of the $12 deal cause "the girls are all wondering about it!!!" I pointed out the customer sales part in the front of the catalog and told her to call with any questions! What a life saver to have that in there now, for times like this one when you're both busy and can't do a real hostess coach. WOW!

Earning the trip to Atlantis is a matter of mapping out a plan for you and your team. Here's a couple of ideas from a team member who is working her business smart!

You need 22,000 points to earn 1 trip. Let's break it down like this: 22,000 points equals $22,000 in Personal & Group sales. Let's say an average show is $500; that would equal 44 shows. 5 people on your team (you and your 4 new recruits that start on or after 2/13/08) would need to do those 44 shows by May 28th. That 9 shows each by May 28th.

You need 36,000 points to earn 2 trips. That would be 72 shows divided by 5 reps equals 14 shows each by May 28th.

This is completely doable! You and your 4 personal recruits that start on or after February 13th is your key to success. I would also recommend that you recruit a few more than the required 4 because ALL your group sales count toward the trip. Also, you can FAST START POINTS right now (until March 19th!)

Whew, I just got back from CA visiting my granddaughter...she's so adorable!

This past week, I held two introductory shows for new directors. One show was over $700 and she booked two shows and the other was over $1400 and she booked two shows! Trouble booking shows?...its a thing of the past with Park Lane.

Everything's sexier in Paris! There were signs all over the place. And what a place! So exciting to spend some time in Las Vegas. We experienced dueling pianos, and Nigel and I ate at Mario Batali's restaurant and experienced the LaRev show at the Wynn. So much fun.

But, I know you're all dying to know what happened at convention! Well, the new jewelry is absolutely gorgeous! Wait until you see the new catalog and some of the pieces for yourself. We were all so impressed and some of us are not easily impressed! BEAUTIFUL!

At the Manager's meeting on Friday, the company distributed over $1 million in bonus checks to those that participated in the 2 annual bonus programs. We literally watched directors receive 1, 2 or 3 checks! Our CEO personally handed out the checks - it took over 45 minutes there were so many! Mind you, these two bonus programs are above and beyond what our compensation plan pays us. Park Lane does not have to do this, but they choose to and because of their generosity, we're all going to earn more money.

Friday night, Nigel and I attended a special dinner that we won - a special thank you goes out to those 4 new directors who qualified and helped us earn the dinner - you know who you are! Hi everyone! Our team is headed to Las Vegas for convention! We're excited to see the NEW 2008 collection and hear where the NEW trip will be.

On a personal note, my daughter Kristie needs your prayers. Her kidneys are functioning at 17%. Please pray for a miracle that they heal themselves or that they at least stay at this level. If they continue to go down, she will have to undergo dialysis as we continue working toward her kidney transplant. For those of you who don't know, Kristie is blind and developmentally disabled...she's 27 but functions at about an 8 to 10 year old level. Our team is growing, we’ve just added South Carolina! This is SO exciting! I think we're up to 9 states now!

I just returned from Reno, meeting with our team there and we did an Initial Training Class at a restaurant. While meeting, we put the ring box on the table with a roll of jewelry and all the waitstaff - about 10 of them- swarmed the table and we booked a show right then! What fun! Make sure you're putting the ring box out on the table when you're doing lunch with girlfriends!

Here's an airplane story. I was flying to Reno on Friday and I was wearing the Destiny heart necklace and the Waterford hostess only bracelet (the lovely flower one) and the La Perla watch and the Oh ring. Well, when we were deplaning, the lady behind me noticed the Waterford bracelet and asked to see it closer. While she was admiring it, I told her I had my own jewelry business and did private showings, as well as home parties. I asked her where lived and she said Seattle. She asked if I had a card or catalog and I handed her the mini-catalog/invite and a $50 HRC coupon. She told me she is about to open a MediSpa soon and she suggested we could do something together. I quickly wrote down her name and number and told her I'd call her.

Here's the lesson: make sure you're wearing some of the pieces from your kit and that you're carrying the "mini-catalogs/invites" with you in your purse to hand out to people when they comment on your jewelry! The Waterford bracelet is one of my favorites now...its a hostess only bracelet that is gorgeous and it ALWAYS gets noticed! And, make sure you have a small notepad in your purse so you can write down names and numbers...be ready for business and it will come to you!

If you are curious what your "net and non" is so far in your first Super Start month, just contact your sponsor, and we will send the info to you. Congratulations Kansas! The group in Kansas just held their first Initial Training Class, despite the nasty weather! Great job everyone!

More EXCITING news from our Kansas group - one new director had her first show and the sales were $500 and she booked 3 shows and a catalog show! She was so excited because it was so easy to book the shows! Our company gives us an awesome hostess program that gives ladies a reason to want to hold their own show...sweet!

Another new director in Kansas received her first check and it was over $200! And at her first show, 3 new people decided to join in the business. Now she's on her way to building a team and helping other women earn additional income as well. Just gives you that warm fuzzy feeling!

We have almost 30 attending convention this month! How exciting!

My personal answers to those questions a few months ago.

1. What is the best thing that can happen if I do this? I will build a team and help women get out of debt. (Since my business credit card averaged $4,000 to $8,000, I know what it feels like to be in debt and "chasing" money to try to make money with an inventory system.)

2. What is the worst thing that can happen if I do this? I'll be out $39. (Oh, and right now you can join for $5 thru February 15!)

3. What is the best thing that can happen if I don't do it? I can't think of a best thing if I don't do it...hmmmm...that's a sign right there.

4. What is the worst thing that can happen if I don't do it? The worst thing is that I would have walked away from direct sales altogether, giving up on myself.

Isn't it grand that we are actually rewarded for our direct sales experience? Let's say you meet someone who has experience holding home parties/shows.
